Chapter 224

Summer POV

I had no idea why Alpha Bradley had asked me to dance with him. I mean he chose me to lead the dance? As he took my hand in his, sparks tingless across my body. Was this normal human behavior? How could sparks fly across your skin and butterflies fluttered in my belly like they wanted to create

havoc?

His vicinity was calming, and surreal. Like I forgot the world around me. As he glided across the floor with me as his partner, I felt like I was dancing on the clouds, and the world faded around us. What was Alpha Bradley doing to me? But this was a dream. Wasn’t it? He was the Alpha of the North, and 171 was a maid. Our worlds collided only briefly, when I had to serve people like him, and after that, there was nothing.

I wasn’t a fool to think that I had a future with him, but my traitorous heart was saying something else. It thundered in his embrace.

Why was it I craved him from the core of my heart? Maybe that was what every girl in the room wanted. Wasn’t this the purpose of the ball? To mingle with the potential candidates, and to marry them?

As we danced across the floor, I could sense the wonder, jealousy and murmurs of a maid dancing with the Alpha. It snapped me back to reality. Lowering my head, I licked my lips, and thought that I should stop dancing. His tight grip on my hand didn’t allow me to leave. It was only when the music stopped that I stepped away from him, wanting to get out of the hall as soon as possible because I didn’t want to paint my back as a target for other girls.

However, when Laura screamed in pain I rushed to her. She had bent over in pain, but then she farted loudly. Gosh, it was so embarrassing, but I held her arm and put it across my shoulders. “Laura, what happened?” I asked.

“My stomach,” she bawled. “It feels like it’s on fire.”

My gaze lifted Alpha Bradley in a silent plea for help. He nodded as if understanding what I wanted. In a few seconds, two men and a nurse came. They helped Laura and took her outside to the ambulance that was standing as an emergency. I accompanied Laura. Alpha Bradley also wanted to come with me, but Tamara stopped him.

“I’ll go with her. You are needed for the ball.”

He clenched his jaw, agreeing reluctantly to Tamara. She came to sit with me in the ambulance.

“You should go back to the ball,” I said. “I can manage.”

She smiled softly. “No Summer. I want to be with you.”

God, why was she so good to me? I wasn’t used to this kind of softness, and I didn’t know that it would slam so hard in my chest. I blinked away the tears that threatened to spill out. “Thanks,” J thanked her in a hoarse voice.

“Anytime,” she said.

We arrived at the pack hospital, and I was amazed by the facility. It was so modern, like I was walking in a five–star hotel. A doctor approached us with more nurses and soon Laura was taken inside. An hour later after all the tests were conducted, the doctor said, “Miss Laura has caught a stomach bug. She won’t be able to take part in the Luna trials.”

“What?” My jaw dropped. “No. No. This can’t be!” I said, blood draining from my face. This was the reason we had come to this place. What would Morelli do now?

The doctor shrugged as Tamara and I stared at him with disbelief.

“How could she get a stomach infection?” I asked.

“I don’t know. Did she eat anything at the party?”

I shook my head. “I wouldn’t know because I arrived late to the party.”

“No, she didn’t eat much,” a deep, throaty voice sounded from behind. Without looking I knew that it was Bradley. What was he doing here?noveldrama

My cheeks heated as I turned my head over my shoulder, and found him staring at me intensely as he approached us.

Tamara cocked her eyebrow. “Why did you come?”

“I couldn’t stay back.” He came to stand beside me. Did he just inhale my smell? Feeling awkward in his presence, I pursed my lips.

“She mostly had drinks,” Bradley informed. “I talked to the servers. The dinner hadn’t started so she didn’t eat much other than having drinks.”

“But this is going to be such a disaster,” I said, worry crawling inside me.

Bradley took my hand in his. He squeezed it softly. “Don’t worry. Things are going to be fine.”

From the periphery of my vision, I saw a nurse heading our way. “Doctor, Laura has settled, and she wants to talk to Summer.”

The doctor frowned. He nodded, and I rushed to speak with Laura. She was lying on the hospital bed, looking pale. “Where’s my phone?” she snapped at

“I don’t have it,” I replied.

“Moron!” she hissed. “Ask the nurse. She must be having it.”

I took a deep breath to calm my anger at the way she threw dirty adjectives at me all the time. The nurse pointed to the side table. I picked up her phone and gave it to her. “Get out,” she said sharply. “I want to talk to my dad.”

I walked out of the room, and stood at the door for a while. Bradley and Tamara came to me.

“Why do you bear with her so much?” Tamara asked with gritted teeth.

I chuckled dryly. “Do I have a choice?”

Bradley’s fist curled on his sides. “It will soon be fine…” he murmured. And it seemed like he muttered it more to himself than to me.

“Come in!” Laura called me after a while.

Tamara and Bradley came in with me much to Laura’s surprise. “Oh, I didn’t know you two were here,” she blabbered.

Bradley crossed his arms as he narrowed his eyes on her. “Would you like to leave the Luna trials?” he asked.

“No!” Laura immediately opposed. “Instead of me, Summer will take part in the Luna trials.”

“What? No!” I countered. “This is ridiculous.”

Laura ignored my words. “She will represent me in the Luna trials. I just talked to daddy. He said that Summer has to represent me, and when I am well, I’ll join from where she left.”

Oh. My. God.

Laura continued, “Daddy doesn’t want me to back down. Not now when Summer is here. I mean what is she here for. She has to help me in every way possible.”

I was sure that Bradley would oppose or maybe famara would be opposed to the idea. I didn’t have it in me to contest Luna trials. I opened my mouth to say it when Bradley said, “It’s fine. She can.”

Wait. What?

“But I can’t!” I protested. “I’m not cut for that.” I can’t replace you!”

“Just shut up, Summer,” Laura retorted. “Daddy wants it, and Alpha Bradley has no problem. Then why are you acting so pricey! You have to take part in it!” She paused for a while and looked at Bradley. “And daddy also told me about the conversation you had with him. You can’t steal our maid just like

that. She will continue to work for me.”

A snarl left Bradley’s lips. Laura shrank in her bed as Tamara tensed. “Say that again, and I will rip your tongue from your mouth.”

I gulped. This entire fiasco was only heading south.

“Y–you can’t speak with me l–like this,” Laura stuttered. “I–I’m your g–guest.”

“Then behave like one!” Bradley warned. “Or do you want me to disqualify you from Luna trials?”

“N–no!” Laura croaked. “I’m sorry.”

Bradley scowled at her, turned and stormed out of the room. “Tammy,” he called. “Make sure that Summer gets another room, and put her name in the list for Luna trials.”

Tamara chuckled as she shook her head. She glanced at me and headed out to her brother. When I was left alone with Laura, she fumed, “You better win this for me, Summer. Else daddy is really gonna be pissed.”

A soul and a half left my body. “Okay,” I squeaked. The nurse announced that the meeting time was over, and so I walked out of the hospital in a haze. What was I going to do now? I didn’t know L about Luna trials. What was this all about? What was expected from me? Sweat trickled down my spine. And Morelli wanted me to win? What the hell was going on in my life? Just a few hours ago, I was planning an escape, and here I was going to take part in the Luna trials. What a twist of fate?

“I’ll drop you home,” a voice breathed down

my neck.

I gasped, clutching my thundering heart. “A–Alpha Bradley, I’ll-”

He placed his finger on my lips. Again. “No argument. I’ll drop you.”

And before I could stop myself, I kissed his finger.
