Chloe had no idea how Connor was doing.

She just kept talking, voice soft and shaky, not letting the silence win.

Every now and then, she'd call his name "Connor... Connor..."-hoping for any sign that he was still with her.

At first, he'd answer, maybe a word or two. Then just a weak "mm."

Eventually, even that faded, his voice growing fainter with every breath.

"Honey, I'm so tired. I just want to sleep for a bit..."

She bit her lip hard, trying not to let herself cry out loud.

"Don't go to sleep, okay?" she pleaded, her words trembling and desperate.

She knew—if Connor closed his eyes now, she might never see them open again.

"I'm begging you, Connor. Please don't sleep. Just talk to me. Talk to me a little longer, okay?"

Everything around her was so quiet, the kind of silence that felt heavy and suffocating.

All Chloe could hear was her own voice, echoing in the darkness, thin and broken, filling the cold, cramped space where they were trapped.

"Connor, I love you. I love you so much. You hear me?"

"Tim and Aaron are waiting for us at home..."

"I can sing for you, if you want. I'm not great at it, so you're not allowed to laugh at me, okay?

She had no idea how long they'd been down there.

Her big brother. Isaac. Cassie. Her dad, her mom, even Lucas...

A tiny smile broke through her tears.

And then, through the thick earth above, she saw a sliver of light.

Her lips trembled as she whispered, "Connor, I see the light..."

Is this what people see before they die? she wondered. I miss them se much-Dad, Mom, Tim, Aaron don't want to go yet.

"Chloe! Chloe!"

Voices poured in from every side, growing louder and more frantic.

And suddenly Chloe realized this wasn't a dream, not some trick her mind was

playing. This was real.

They'd found her.

She could hear the roar of digging machines, the shouts from above.

They're here.

Tears spilled down Chloe's cheeks, her heart beating with hope.

"Connor, they found us! We're going to be okay!"

She called his name again and again, but there was no answer.

She burrowed closer into his arms-

And felt how cold he was. So cold, it scared her.

Sobs wracked her body, but she couldn't stop.

"Chloe! Chloe, are you there?"

"My Chloe, please answer!"

"Mommy! Mommy!"

The voices were so close now. But Chloe couldn't bring herself to reply.

She just lay there, wrapped in Connor's arms, crying her heart out.

"Connor, let me stay here with you, okay? It's too cold for you to be here alone."

She pressed her head gently against his, whispering, "Connor, I'll sing for you again... I've got a magic wand it makes things big, makes things small makes things beautiful...and I'll wish for comics, chocolate, and a house full of toys for you.."

A weak, hoarse voice—barely more than a whisper, but with a trace of smile—came from right beside her.
