Chapter 787 The Source of Courage
Cindy was incredulous, "Phoebe, does this mean you and Edward are now enemies? What are you going to do?"
"I don't know," Phoebe said, troubled.
"Forget it, Edward will come around," Cindy comforted her. They chatted for a while longer before ending the video call.
Phoebe came out of the walk-in closet and returned to bed, where she gently placed the disheveled Hubert, Boris, and Noomi back on their little pillows and covered them with blankets.
In her sleep, Noomi called out "Mommy." Phoebe smiled, and all her fatigue vanished. With Hubert, Boris, and Noomi by her side, what did she have to fear?
No matter what would happen next, she would face it bravely and never back down.
The next morning, Phoebe walked out of her bedroom. The door next to hers opened, and Ruby came out, dressed in a shirt and jeans, clearly ready to go out.
"Morning, Ruby."
"Morning," Ruby replied, walking downstairs with her. "I saw the video of Edward proposing to you. It was so romantic. Are you two going to get married?"
Phoebe shook her head, "No."
"Why not?" Ruby asked, puzzled.
Phoebe walked down the stairs, her hand on the railing, "I didn't say yes."
Ruby paused, looking at Phoebe's tall figure, and hesitantly asked, "Is it because of Theodore?"
"No, it's because we're not right for each other," Phoebe glanced back at her. "Enough about me. How have you been these past few days? Is work tiring?"
Ruby looked down guiltily, "Not tiring. The boss is pretty nice."
"That's good."
After breakfast, they left together. While changing shoes, Phoebe remembered to ask Ruby where she worked and if she needed a ride.
Ruby quickly mentioned a direction opposite to Superstar Entertainment, "It would be too out of the way for you to drop me off, and there's traffic in the morning. It's more convenient for me to take the subway."
"Alright, I'll drop you off at the subway station."
Afraid of arousing Phoebe's suspicion, Ruby got into her car. Ten minutes later, the car stopped by the subway station, and Ruby got out after saying goodbye to Phoebe.
She watched the car drive away, looked around, and saw a mall nearby. She needed to buy groceries, so she crossed the street to the mall.
After buying groceries, she was about to hail a cab back to the estate when two burly men blocked her way. She looked up and recognized them as bodyguards from the Adams family.
She stared at them warily, "What are you doing here?"
"Miss Adams, Mr. Adams wants you to come back. The car is waiting outside," one of the men gestured for her to follow.
Ruby didn't know why her father, Charles, wanted to see her, but she didn't want to see him. However, judging by the bodyguards' firm stance, they would likely force her into the car if she refused.
"Fine," Ruby said, following them towards the car parked by the road while looking around. She saw a police car with several officers getting out.
Her eyes lit up. She suddenly threw her grocery bag at one of the bodyguards, catching him off guard.
The other bodyguard reached out to grab Ruby.

Ruby ran towards the police, shouting, "Help! They're trying to kidnap me! Officers, they're trying to kidnap me!"
The police saw a woman running towards them, shouting about a kidnapping, followed by two burly men.
They immediately drew their batons, shielding Ruby and glaring at the approaching

"What are you doing?" the police waved their batons, intimidating the bodyguards.
The bodyguards, seeing the situation, quickly explained, "She's our young lady. Her father asked us to bring her back."
Ruby, hiding behind the police, shouted, "They're lying! They want to take me back to serve their master. They're human traffickers!"
Hearing this, the police made a quick decision. One of them waved his baton, "Get lost, or we'll take you to the station."
The bodyguards exchanged glances, realizing they couldn't take Ruby today, and left.
Watching the car drive away, the police turned to Ruby, "They're gone. Don't be afraid. Where do you live? We'll take you home."
Ruby, relieved, thanked the kind officers and said she could go back on her own.
The police didn't insist. One of them picked up her fallen groceries and handed them to her, "Miss, be careful out there."
"Thank you."
Watching the police go about their duties, Ruby hailed a cab. As she got in, she felt touched. There were still good people in the world.

But while strangers were willing to help her, her own parents wanted to push her into the abyss.
The bodyguards returned to the Adams Group, where Charles sat behind his desk, looking angry.
"What happened?" Charles slammed the desk, "I pay you, and you can't even handle this?"
The bodyguards hung their heads, "Sorry, Mr. Adams. Miss Adams resisted and said we were human traffickers."
Charles was displeased, "Where is she living now? What about the child she had? Bring him to me. I don't believe she won't come back for him."
The bodyguards exchanged glances, "Miss Adams is living in Lakeview Estates. The security there is very tight. We can't get in."
"I don't want excuses. I want results. I've raised her for over twenty years. Now the company is in trouble, and someone wants her to marry them. She has to marry!" Charles was furious.
The Adams Group's business had been declining, with increasing debts, to the point of being unsustainable.
This was why Charles hadn't been pressuring Ruby for over a year. He was too busy with his own troubles to bother with her.
"Stake out where she lives. When you see her, grab her and take her to Neil Perry's house to be his mistress," Charles ordered ruthlessly.
He had no regard for their father-daughter relationship, only thinking about saving the
company, even if it meant sacrificing Ruby's life.
Ruby returned to Lakeview Estates, avoiding Evelyn and the others by entering through another gate and heading to Building Three.
As she entered, she almost bumped into Donovan, who was about to leave. She
quickly stepped aside, her back hitting the door.
Seeing her flustered state, Donovan's eyes turned cold, "Why are you so jumpy? Is someone chasing you?"
What do you think?
