Chapter 46
"That's not really appropriate," Lily said instinctively.
Maryanne didn't mind at all. "What's so-"
Before she could finish, Terence interrupted. "It really isn't. Let's give Lily some space and head out."
The courthouse was in the suburbs, serviced by a single bus line.
Lily waited nearly ten minutes for the next one.
Riding the bus through the city's streets, she realized that after the divorce, she wouldn't have to worry about being overwhelmed by memories.
It was because, over the past two years, all the memories they shared were tied to that one house.
There weren't many memories after all.
They only had meals together and shared nights in bed. There was nothing except for those.
She had no idea what she had gone through for the past two years.
It wasn't a long period, but they lived under the same roof. She saw him before she fell asleep and when she woke up.
She didn't know how long it would take to forget Xavier.
However, she knew she had to forget him. She wouldn't let herself be attached to him for the rear of her life.
She refused to live as someone else's shadow, dragging through a meaningless existence in a loveless environment.
She also refused to be his cover for an affair with Sarah.
She spent most of the day riding buses, traveling through every part of Jadeford.
It was nearly 6:00 pm when she finally returned home.
Lily was surprised to see the Maybach parked in the driveaway.noveldrama
Xavier was home?
She paused, standing still as she looked through the floor-to-ceiling windows at his tall figure inside.
Xavier was on the phone. His expression grew more tense with every word coming from the other end.
"Xavier, we only have one son! If Hayden goes to prison, it'll destroy all of us, including Lily! She's been by your side for years. Even if she hasn't done much for you, she's been through a lot. "You can't just stand by and do nothing! Do whatever it takes to get him out! Prison isn't a place for human beings...and he can't stay in prison..."
Bobby was pleading and trying to evoke pity. He was dragging Lily into his argument.
However, Xavier was unfazed. He said coldly, "If you have an issue, talk to Timothy. He'll explain everything."
Dealing with Bobby's stubbornness was exhausting. Xavier had specifically come home early to try to be there for Lily. He wanted to show some support after her accident and the court ruling against Hayden.
He had little patience and no interest in wasting time on Bobby's demands.
"Shouldn't you take responsibility for this? How could you not help Hayden after everything Lily's done for you? If you're going to be this heartless, I'll expose your marriage to the public! You owe my daughter an official title, you know that?"
Bobby would never dare provoke Xavier unless pushed to his limit. Desperation over Hayden had driven him to this.
He was trying to guilt-trip Xavier and hoping to get him on his side. However, seeing that Xavier was about to brush him off and refer him to Timothy again, he blurted out a reckless threat. Xavier despised being threatened, so the moment he heard it, his expression turned icy. "Take responsibility? Do whatever you want, just make sure you're ready to face the consequences!"
"Uh, alright..."
Ignoring whatever else Bobby tried to say, Xavier ended the call abruptly and tossed his phone onto the couch.
He pinched the bridge of his nose while trying to rein in the frustration that was flaring up inside him.
The electronic lock clicked, signaling someone entering.
Lily walked in slowly. She did not even bother to change out of her shoes.
She stopped at the entrance to the living room. At that moment, her gaze reflected Xavier's silhouette. She was calm and composed.
She was unsettlingly calm. For a moment, Xavier met her gaze. An unexpected wave of unease washed over him, leaving him with a hollow feeling deep inside.
They locked eyes for a long time before she broke the silence. Lily placed a signed divorce agreement on the coffee table and slid it toward him.
"Let's proceed with the divorce. I've already signed the paper, now it's your turn."
