Chapter 685
Elias was thinking about what happened yesterday and wanted to talk it over with Elodie.
As they arrived, Esmeralda happened to come back at the same time.
"She's awake?"
"She is. Come on in." Esmeralda pushed open the door.
Elodie turned to look. She hadn't slept well the previous night, and it showed in her pale, drawn face.
When she spotted Latham, she managed a greeting. "Dr. Latham?"
Latham let out a sigh. "I heard a little about what happened, so I thought I'd check
in on you. You need to take care of yourself and try not to worry too much."
Elodie forced a small, colorless smile. "Alright. Thank you."
"What brings you here so early, Dr. Warwick?" Esmeralda was the first to ask. Elodie's fingers tightened on the bedsheet, her eyes fixed intently on Elias.
Elias stepped forward, his gaze steady on Elodie. "Yesterday, when I saw you, there was an IV needle in your arm. I had the residue in the syringe analyzed. It turns out it was a clinical medication meant to improve circulation, but it was mixed with an anesthetic-something quite potent. That's what caused your sudden reaction."
Elodie's face drained of color, her lips pressing into a tight line. "But... this is a hospital. How could something like that happen here?"
Especially in a hospital of this size.
How could something so terrifying occur?
Latham understood at once. "Someone gave a pregnant woman that kind of injection? That's not just a careless mistake—that's deliberate."
What kind of doctor could make such a basic, dangerous error?
Esmeralda was practically shaking with anger. "Didn't you catch who did it?"
Elias shook his head. "Whoever it was, they clearly know their way around the hospital. There haven't been any leads so far."
"That medication's effects typically last about an hour. It was only because of your preexisting condition that you reacted right away. If you hadn't fought back when you did, there would've been no trace left to discover your body would have metabolized the drug quickly, and we'd have no way to trace it back."
Elias frowned. For something like this to happen in a hospital was outrageous.
Who would ever expect such a thing could happen here? No one could have seen it coming.
If we're calling it a medical accident...
That's one way to put it.
But it defied all logic.
"This wasn't an accident," Elodie said, taking a deep breath to steady the tightness in her chest. "I can feel it-this was aimed at me. Right now, we need to find those two people."
No matter what.
She had to get to the bottom of it.
This was no ordinary incident anymore.
Esmeralda clenched her jaw. "Maybe we should just call the police."
Elias agreed. "I've already reported it to the hospital administration.
They't do a thorough investigal
find."
Let's wait and see what the
He paused before adding, "On my way up, I ran into Mr. Silverstein. He just left, didn't he?"
Elodie's eyes flickered, but she simply nodded, saying nothing more.
Elias couldn't tell exactly what was going on between them, but it was clear... things weren't good.
Latham seemed to suddenly remember something. He looked at Elodie in surprise. "Mr. Silverstein? That's Ms. Thorne's husband, isn't it?”
Elodie didn't know how to respond. The divorce wasn't finalized, their relationship
was shattered, but she couldn't exactly say that out loud.
Esmeralda stepped in for her. "Why? Is something wrong?"
A realization dawned on Latham's face. He clapped his hands together. "That's right! I remember now."
"No wonder Mr. Silverstein looked
familiar when I saw him at the hospital. Elias and I both transferred here from overseas-I specialize in transplant and oncology surgery. Originally, I wasn't planning to return, since I still had patients over there. It was only after I wrapped things up that I was offered a generous salary and bonus to come back, all arranged at the last minute. They said there was an important case here that needed my expertise, but didn't give me details-just a brief run-in with the hospital director before I left."
"Come to think of it, Mr. Silverstein was the one who brought me back. It mustnoveldrama
have been for your uncle's liver transplant, right, Ms. Thorne?"
What do you think?
