The third branch didn’t speak, but their expressions made it clear—they agreed.

Talhand had three sons and several grandsons, but he’d always favored Maddox the most. The boy was slick, resourceful, and the most promising heir.

No one ever said it aloud, but resentment had simmered for years.

“Then go apologize to Jonathan!” Trev snapped. “Didn’t you say whoever messes up sh responsibility?”

He hadn’t forgotten nearly being beaten to death the last time.

“Maddox, talk to Jonathan. See what he wants.”

Maddox gave a bitter smile. “Grandfather, you’ve known him for years. Don’t you know what kind of person he is?”

Of course Talhand knew.

When they first made the decision to keep White’s situation from Jonathan, they’d hoped to play both sides.

He had considered what would happen if Jonathan found out, but back then, he assumed the deep relationship between their families–and especially between Maddox and Jonathan–would soften the blow.

When Maddox informed him that Jonathan had already found out, he’d panicked.

But when nothing happened immediately, he convinced himself he’d been right–Jonathan still valued their friendship.

And so he grew bolder, dismissing the matter entirely.

Now, Jonathan was serious. And Talhand was finally afraid.

He repeated, “Just go talk to him.”
