Chapter 329
Laura's face twisted in rage. Without hesitation, she swung her hand, landing a fierce slap across the doctor's face.
"What kind of worthless bastard calls himself a doctor, yet sends my husband home just to wait for death?" she screamed, her voice shaking with fury.
Dr. Peter stood frozen, stunned. One of Vermont's finest doctors had just been humiliated by this woman.noveldrama
“Listen carefully, woman,” he snarled bitterly.
“Your husband will die. Nothing on earth can save him now, not even your parade of second opinions. Frankly, with a venomous wife like you, it's no wonder he's headed to an early grave."
Laura exploded, her voice cracking with raw fury.
"What the hell did you just say to me? You dare sentence my husband to death and blame me for it? Are you begging to die?"
The assistants quickly stepped forward, forming a barrier around Dr. Peter, terrified by Laura's wild wrath.
"Guards!" Laura roared. "Beat them! Break every damn bone in their bodies!"
"Yes, Ma'am!” Two guards surged forward, striking viciously at the cowering medical staff.
Dr. Peter scrambled desperately to escape before the guards reached him.
Laura, still blazing with anger, seized an elderly doctor whose face had already turned pale blue. She grabbed him roughly by the collar, pulling him close.
“Listen closely, old man! You'll save my husband's life or lose yours-choose wisely!"
“I..... I am not able,” the doctor murmured, a pitiful pledge trembling on his lips.
"What good is it calling yourself a doctor if you can't even save one man?"
“Ma'am,” the doctor whimpered helplessly, tears brimming in his frightened eyes, "I'm not Jesus."
"Then become one!” she roared, slapping him across the face again.
She struck the poor doctor several more times, each slap louder and harsher than the last.
Finally, her breathing slowed, and Alex's words echoed through her mind, calming her just enough to regain some composure.
Decisively, she stormed from the room, her bodyguards close behind. She would find Lyra and that younger doctor. If persuasion didn't work, force certainly would.
Minutes later, Laura appeared suddenly before Alex, sweating and frantic.
"Hey, you! Stop right there!" she commanded. "My husband just coughed up blood! Get back in there immediately and fix him!"
Alex turned around slowly, exhaustion and frustration etched deep on his face.
"Is there something wrong with how you talk, or do you actually think that's normal? Haven't you heard? Slavery's been over for a long time."
"No one's better than anyone else. This country stands for freedom. So don't act like you're above people— it's disgusting."
Laura glared down at Alex with unbridled contempt.
“Don't forget who you're talking to. I'm Laura Montclair, one of Chicago's ruling lords. I have power, money, everything. You're nothing. Obeying me is your only ticket to survival."
Her gaze was filled with disdain, confident that a nobody like Alex would never dare reject such a chance to curry favor with her powerful family.
Alex simply shrugged, unperturbed. “Well, sorry to disappoint you, but your favors mean nothing to me. Feel free to find another doctor."
"You arrogant bastard! Think carefully—it's not every day someone like you gets such a privilege!" Laura sneered, tossing her head with practiced contempt.
She was used to flaunting her pride and drowning in the hollow praise that followed.
"No thanks. Your so-called honor is far too generous for me,” Alex shot back without missing a beat.
Two of Laura's bodyguards finally caught up to her.
She turned sharply to them, her voice dripping venom, "Take this insolent man to treat Mr. Montclair. If he resists, break his legs—leave his arms intact though, he'll need them.”
As the bodyguards advanced, Sophia and Lyra quickly stepped between them and Alex.
"You two better back off," Sophia warned, her voice firm. "Take another step and we'll call the police."
Laura let out a disdainful laugh. "Police? Darling, they're all comfortably tucked into my pocket Now, teach this fool his place. Make sure he bows next time he sees me. He should beg for mercy just for the chance to help!"
One of the bodyguards shouted a warning, “Ladies, get out of the way or you'll get hurt too.”
"We're not moving!" Lyra snapped defiantly.
"Then you asked for it!" the guard growled, raising a fist—but before his blow landed, he collapsed abruptly to the ground, gasping.
His partner rushed forward but fell just as swiftly, clutching his chest.
Laura stood frozen in shock, staring in disbelief. “What—what's happening?”
Alex offered her a cold smile. "You know, heart attacks are surprisingly common. Looks like your goons have
weak hearts-probably from breathing in all that arrogance you spew."
Sophia tightened her grip on Alex's arm. “Let's just go. She's nothing but trouble."
"Absolutely,” Alex agreed, turning to leave.
"You-!" Laura's voice broke with fury, choking on her own rage.
She cursed herself inwardly. If only she had brought more competent men, this arrogant fool would be begging at her feet.
Desperation clawed at her pride.
“Wait! How much money do you want? A blank check—name your price!” she hissed, eyes blazing with contempt.
Lyra froze mid-step, her grip tightening urgently on Alex's sleeve. She stared at him with pleading eyes. "Alex! She's offering a blank check! Why not save a life? Aren't you a doctor?"
Alex sighed inwardly.
Didn't this woman have any self-respect?
Sophia started to protest, tugging Alex away. “Lyra, don't—”
"Half the check is yours, Sophia,” Lyra quickly interjected, causing Sophia's protests to falter instantly.
Sophia bit her lip, torn between pride and greed. She looked at Alex guiltily, her voice softening.
“Maybe......maybe you should help him. He's my uncle, after all.”
Alex studied Sophia's conflicted gaze, finally relenting. He turned sharply toward Laura.
"Fine, I'll save your husband. But I want a blank check for these two ladies, and—you owe me an apology for your pathetic, insulting behavior."
Laura's eyes widened in outrage. “An apology? Dream on, peasant! Who the hell do you think you are,
demanding that from me? The Montclairs are aristocrats—we don't bow to trash!"
“Suit yourself,” Alex shrugged dismissively. “Find another doctor. I don't care.”
Laura's face twisted in fury. “Listen to me, bastard! If my husband dies, it'll be your fault. Don't blame me when you pay with your miserable life. You'll become the enemy of the Montclairs!"
Her voice rose to a dangerous pitch, trembling with rage and panic.
"Decide now! You either gain the favor of the Montclairs or become our enemy. There is no middle ground and I promise you'll regret
it. My men are already on their way to arrest you!"
What do you think?
